What this data can and cannot tell you

It can tell you a school's size, the grades it offers, how many teachers it reports, whether it is a charter school, and whether it sits in a city, suburb, town or rural area.

It cannot tell you whether a school is “good”. Statistics describe a school as a whole; they do not predict any one student's experience, and differences between schools often reflect context such as funding, location and the students served. We never rank schools or combine measures into a score.

Official data arrives one to two years after the school year it covers, and states do not always define things the same way. Each page says when figures are missing, suppressed or not comparable. Read definitions & limitations.
