Enrollment & demographics
Public schools in the 50 states and DC reported 49,033,162 students in school year 2024–25, summed from school records in the Common Core of Data.
How enrollment is counted
Enrollment (NCES calls it “membership”) is the count of students on a school's rolls on or near October 1, reported by each state education agency. It includes pre-kindergarten students the school serves and excludes adult education. A student is counted once, at the school that reports them.
Demographic categories are the seven federal race/ethnicity groups and sex as reported by states. SchoolScope shows them only as shares of a school or district, hides any group under 10 students, and hides one more group when needed so a hidden number cannot be worked out by subtraction.
Counts are a snapshot. They do not show students who enroll later in the year, and they are not comparable with state reports that use a different count date.
